Georgetown's cowardice

Georgetown University is a private institution, Catholic, founded by the Jesuits in 1789.

Like Northwest Nazarene University, which is run by the Nazarene Church, Georgetown University is a church-run university.

Obama spoke at Georgetown's Gaston Hall on Tuesday.

From a Foxnews article:

Georgetown University hid religious symbols at White House request

Georgetown University hid a religious inscription representing the name of Jesus during President Obama's address there Tuesday, FOXNews.com has confirmed, because White House staff asked the school to cover up all religious symbols and signs while the president was on stage.

The monogram IHS, whose letters spell out the name of Jesus, and which normally perches above the stage in Gaston Hall where the president spoke, was covered over with what appeared to be black wood during the address.

Then, Obama made reference to the Sermon on the Mount:

Though his advance team asked that the religious signs be veiled, the president himself took up religious discourse and discussed a passage from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount as he outlined his plans for an economic recovery.

"We cannot rebuild this economy on the same pile of sand," he said during his remarks, which came two days after Easter. "We must build our house upon a rock."

So what's going on? Why hide religious symbols in a private university, as though ashamed of them, and then cite Matthew on the Sermon on the Mount? Perhaps Obama would be better served by Luke 6:47-49, for surely building an economy - his speech at Georgetown was about the economy - for surely building an economy upon heaping debt and borrowing is hardly building upon a foundation of rock. Luke is more straightforward and less open to waffling interpretation:

"I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete."

The only 'digging down deep' being done by Obama is into your pockets and mine. There is no rock-like foundation there. Quite the contrary, building an economy on monumental debt is like building a house on quicksand. What will be the torrent that strikes our house? How will we withstand it?
